More Than Rubies
Mother's Day is right around the corner and I am excited to further reflect on the wonderful women in my life. I not only have a beautiful mother, but exemplary sisters in-law, mother in-law, a sister, aunts, nieces, and even women in my ward that I look up to. Yes, there is something incredibly special about being a biological mother, but the cool thing about women is we have the most amazing divine gifts we've been blessed with. As Julie B. Beck calls it, "A Mother Heart". She gave a talk in 2004 about the significance of women's divine qualities relating to motherhood. One of my favorite parts was when she quoted Proverbs and said,
"What is a mother heart and how is one acquired? We learn about some of those qualities in the scriptures. To paraphrase Proverbs: 'Who can find a … woman [with a mother heart]? for her price is far above rubies. … She … worketh willingly with her hands. … With the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. … She stretcheth out her hand to the poor. … Strength and honour are her clothing. … She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.'"
This reminded me of the sacred place of women, their sacrifices, their love for others, and their natural desire to do good. It's no wonder that Satan longs for the heart of women. If he can get a hold of us, the world will surely be devastated. There was an excellent quote about this from someone and I absolutely cannot find it! Please let me know if you do! Satan knows we have the power to influence generations with our goodness. Sister Beck said, "There is no limit to what a woman with a mother heart can accomplish. Righteous women have changed the course of history and will continue to do so, and their influence will spread and grow exponentially throughout the eternities." Not only can we influence those around us in our families, but also in ward families, neighborhoods, communities, and with the power of technology we can even move the forward the kingdom of God worldwide. There is no limit to the power of a good woman. Her worth is far more than any material thing, for she is divinely appointed to be on the Lord's errand. Satan longs to break us. He is "a destroyer of the 'souls of men'". We have been promised, however, that "If you live up to your privileges, the angels cannot be restrained from being your associates." This makes me want to try harder. This makes me want to partner with the Savior to avoid Satan's snares in life and overcome weaknesses that make me prone to his traps. I want angels beside me as I raise my children, minister to families, and fulfill callings. We are literally in a war for our souls and we have the ability to call upon heavenly help if we can but stay true to our divine heritage. Women are essential to the work of the Lord. He loves us. He longs to hold our hands and give us a hug once again. How great will be our joy when we see the angels that have assisted us in our earthly journey and the souls we've helped survive the war both on both sides of the veil. Women- never demean yourself or your ability to do things. This does not come from our Savior. Jeffrey R Holland reminds us that "as children of God, we should not demean or vilify ourselves, as if beating up on ourselves is somehow going to make us the person God wants us to become." The Savior and our Heavenly Parents would never, ever speak to us in the way most of us speak to ourselves. Be kind to yourself. Be kind to others. You have worth far greater than rubies, worth that is rooted in divinity. Stay strong when you can, and when you can't call upon the Lord to fill the gap. Mothers and women are amazing. YOU are amazing. Happy Mother's Day!
